Grade 2 Lesson 3: Careers

What does the word "#Career" mean?

In the most basic sense, a career is a #job that one dedicates their life to do. Examples of a career are a #lawyer, #firefighter, or #police #officer. Many people decide what career to pursue based on their interests and skills. Some may have the same career for life, but others may choose to try many different careers over a lifetime.

The word "career" comes from a #French word meaning "#road". It came to mean someone's path through #life. People now use this word only for someone's #profession, or a #job that has an opportunity for advancement.

Children are typically aware of only the relatively small number of #occupations to which they are exposed, for example, #doctor, #dentist, #teacher, #firefighter, and whatever it is their parents and relatives do to make a living. At a young age, learning about other occupations broadens their choices and increases the odds that they will be able to find suitable careers.

As a parent, there are a few things you can do to help your kids with career exploration when they are young:
1. Help them read about different careers: When your child expresses interest in any occupation, encourage her/him to research it to learn more.
2. Connect your kids with people from different professions so they can ask these professionals questions they may have
3. Show them "live" how people in different professions operate and answer their queries
4. Keep Your Opinions to Yourself: Your child may express interest in a career you think is wrong for her/him. Dont stop them. Let them explore

When one thinks of #finance or #financialliteracy, one thinks of #money and how to manage it. Or how to #invest it wisely. It is important for all of us to think of #education as an #investment too, probably the most important investment one can make
