Grade 9 Lesson 1: Ways to #earn #money

We begin our #shortlessons for the 9th grade with a topic that a lot of us may be interested in – what are the different ways to make money?

While there are several ways to make money, they can be grouped into the following 4 buckets:

1. Doing a #Job or #employment
Most commonly, a job is an activity, often regular and performed in exchange for #payment ("for a living"). The person doing the job is called an #employee and the entity/individual giving this job to an employee is called the #employer. Typically, a job would be someone's #career. Most people spend up to forty or more hours each week in paid #employment. While many people do hold a full-time occupation, "day job" typically refers to those who hold the position solely to pay living expenses.

2. Running 1 or multiple #businesses
A #business is an organization where people work together. In a business, people work to make and #sell #products or #services. Other people buy the products and services. The business owner is the person who hires people for work. A business can earn a profit for the #products and #services it offers. The word business comes from the word busy and means doing things. Most businesses are created for #commerce. There are big and small businesses. For example, one person can open a small barber shop. A big business, like #Microsoft, employs thousands of people all over the world.

3. #Income made via #Investments
Investing is an action you take with your money to make it grow. There are many things you could invest your money in. Some popular options for investing are #stocks, #bonds, and #realestate, all of which help your money grow. When you put your money in these avenues they become your investments. We have covered this topic in detail in some of our prior lessons.

4. #Contracting and #Freelancing
A #contract job or a #freelance job is one where a person works for themselves, rather than for a #company. While #contractors/#freelancers do take on contract work for companies and organizations, they are ultimately self-employed. Contract/Freelance work can be full-time or part-time. The contractor/freelancer can choose to work on one of the multiple projects at the same time. Below are some examples of ways to make money via contracting/freelancing gigs:
1. Writing
2. Test websites and apps
3. Take surveys for money
4. Make money from your blog as an affiliate
5. Sell your wares online e.g., at #Amazon, #Etsy
6. Get advertising revenue from your blog or YouTube channel
7. Photography
8. Become a dog walker
9. Home repairs and maintenance
10. Real-estate agents
11. Babysitting
And more….

There may be several other categories or sub-categories for ways how to make money. The above are the most common ones.
